that brought down the head of the cia, general david petraeus. another u.s. general is caught in the same tangled web. john allen, top commander in afghanistan, is being investigated by the pentagon for allegedly sending inappropriate e-mails to a married woman, the same woman whose complaint of threatening e-mails from general petraeus' lover cracked the scandal wide open. barbara starr is trying to sort this out for us. it is rather complicated, what's the latest you're getting? >> it is still the same fundamental question for the last 24 hours, wolf. why is john allen being investigated and how on earth did he get caught up in this? marine corps general john allen denies an extramarital affair with jill kelly, the florida socialite whose concern over threatening e-mails led to an investigation that revealed an affair between cia director david petraeus and his biographer, paula broadwell. a pentagon official told reporters allen who commands the war in afghanistan is adamant he did nothing wrong. a senior official close to allen tells cnn of kelly there is no affair, she's a bored soci
, the u.s. general in charge of allied troops in afghanistan, the top commander john allen is himself the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through
, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, allegedly sent those pictures before any investigation began, but as you can see, the story is getting much mor
, how much play is this getting over in london where you are? >> it's global fascination with the u.s. focused on this issue. they listen to what we say to each other and what we think is important. they're listening with some sense of whimsy with what we're up to. >> general, thank you so much. >>> and speaking of the fbi investigation, i guess, who on capitol hill should have been told, defense secretary leon panetta was asked about that this morning. >> that's another issue that we got to look at. as former director of cia and having worked very closely with the intelligence committees, you know, i believe that there's a responsibility to make sure that the intelligence committees are informed of issues that could affect, you know, the security of those intelligence operations. >> both mike rogers, they're going to press the cia over the time line of the investigation. >> we have rules and laws that specify when you kick these matters up the command chain. we'll find out if those rules were violated. looking at the fbi part of the investigation, if you're the superior of the guy wh
still has faith in general john allen. he, of course, is the current u.s. commander in afghanistan who is now under investigation by the pentagon's inspector general for what officials described as potentially inappropriate e-mails with one of the women directly involved in the case. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has more on this ever-widening story. >> reporter: the scandal involving two very different women, tampa socialite jill kelley and petraeus biographer paul broadwell ensnared not only petraeus but his successor. john allen who took over from petraeus in afghanistan and is the president's choice to be supreme allied commander of nato forces in europe, a nomination now temporarily on hold. >> sweetheart, thank you for all that you have done for me and for our precious -- >> reporter: the general is married with a sterling record but on a flight to australia monday night aides to defense secretary leon panetta said there was a dramatic turn in the case. fbi investigators uncovered potentially inappropriate communications between the general and jill ke
right now some of the conventional wisdom says that u.s. ambassador to the u.n. susan rice even though she's embattled over her comments on benghazi, she may be the favorite for that role. so you've got some trial balloons floating around here. we know there are a couple deputies to the secretary of defense who are also being considered for the role. we'll have to wait and see exactly how it plays out. >> all right, brianna keilar, you have a full plate. >> yes. >> thank you very much. >> next hour we'll get reaction to general allen now being tangled in this scandal. nic paton walsh will join us with perspective there. >> and tom fuentes from the fbi will join us to talk about all this. >> then on "starting point," a man whose own sex scandal led to his down fall, former new jersey governor jim mcgreevey. jason chaffetz will way in and debbie wasserman shultz. >> man there is a lot going on today. you might not know this man. his software might be on your computer. john mcafee wanted for questioning now in a murder case. we'll have the details. >> another bizarre one. talk to a u.s. army veteran and ceo of concern veterans of america. he joined us from the twin cities. pete, we know you served under both the guys. what do you think? >> well, eats a crummy situation, no doubt. but i did serve under both of them. i couldn't hold them in prior professional regard. they are both mission first, and these are difficult personal circumstances but at the end of the day i don't think it precludes them from being professionals in their field. we are talking about the number of e-mails, don't ask me why i was asking entertainment tonight last night. it was on in the background. but it reads like a soap opera and the media feeds it and i don't think any of it has to do with how well these men have served, the years they have given this country on the battlefield and what they have done. it's a disservice to them for all of us to jump to conclusions on information we don't have. >> and you have a general in charge of african command that got demoted and retired for abusing privileges of using military craft for personal use from his wife's shopping sprees to st
to pass legislation that will end trade restrictions and help u.s. exporters. >>> george allen says he doesn't know what the future will bring, but he says one thing is certain. he will not run for political office again. the former governor and senator lost the virginia senate race to tim kaine last week by more than 200,000 votes. he told the richmond times dispatch that he and his wife poured their hearts into the campaign, and he is still trying to figure out his next step. allen, a republican, lost his senate seat in 2006 to democrat jim webb. >>> the man believed to be the east coast rapist is expected to enter his first guilty plea in northern virginia today. aaron thomas is expected to take responsibility for the 2009 attack on three teenage trick or treaters in prince william county. he's accused of forcing them into the woods and raping two of them on halloween night. thomas is also expected to enter a second guilty plea in a different case in loudoun county at the end of the month. both cases carry life sentences. >>> opening statements this morning in a murder case involvin
you do that. >> gretchen: that's not how the u.s. military works i wouldn't think. >> brian: that's not how the koches or law enforcement works. >> steve: sometimes you have to ad lib and they were not raid. >> gretchen: look at the thwarted terrorist attacks in new york city maybe that will make you think about how preventative law enforcement works and preventative military works. >> steve: what about blowing the hole in the consulate wall and 40 people got out and that was prior warning. >> gretchen: there are other stories making news today. you probably seen the head of the world's most famous anti-virus cum. john mcafee wanted for murder? police in belize want to question him about the shooting death of a neighbor. fall file would a complaint for mcafee for firing guns. mcafee had recently experimented with drugs and arrested on gun charges. >> senator john kerry will be nominated to president obama's cabinet but not as secretary of state. president obama may ask the vietnam veteran to replace leon panetta instead it is unlikely he will stay on for the full second term. as f
in afghanistan. according to a u.s. senior defense official the fbi uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of e-mails between the general and jill kelley. now kelley is the woman whose initial complaint to the fbi led to the discovery of evidence about the affair between general petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell. defense secretary panetta's comments on the scandal and his future in the obama administration. then there's the fbi agent and friend of jill kel yae's. he's now subject of an internal fbi probe himself for inappropriate behavior. let's get into the details. overnight the pentagon announced this, that general allen's nomination to be allied supreme commander over all of anywnato been delayed and panetta has asked them to ex pa diet joseph dunfer. >> while this matter is under investigation and before the facts are determined, general allen will remain commander. general allen is entitled to due process in this matter. in the meantime the secretary has asked the president, and the president has agreed, to put his nomination on hold until the relevant facts are determined.
, but do talk about her relationship with generals at the u.s. central command and u.s. special operations command. according to a source presumably we can assume one of those was general allen. >> and these harassing e-mails, we have confirmed, and all sides have confirmed, they came from paula broadwell? >> the fbi was able to trace them back, although they were sent through anonymous accounts, they were able to trace them back to paula broadwell. i do think, and this is interesting, what you're talking to pete about, the fbi's role here, the revelations of the last 24 hours are probably going to intensify the questions that congress is going to have about the way fbi, the way fbi handled this last -- the last couple days we're being told the fbi just happened to wrap up the case the week before the election. it did the final interviews with david petraeus and paula broadwell. that last week. just a few days before the election and then they wrap up the case and tell james clapper. now, it turns out, the case wasn't quite wrapped up, they still had more additional work to do with the sea
and spending cuts would have a major effect on the u.s. economy. 44% say it would have a major effect on their own financial situation. and there's little confidence both sides can work together and find a compromise. only 38% say the president and congress will reach an agreement. as we continue to take a serious look at the issues facing the country, today the issue is taxes. we've got the alternative minimum tax, child tax credit, estate tax, it's a mess of taxes set to expire. what are we left to do when they do? let's bring in dan gross, columnist and global news editor for "daily beast." they talked about this democrats coming around to a romney/obama idea to raise taxes on the rich indirectly by capping deductions at $35,000. third way likes the plan and says it could raise $1.3 trillion in ten years without raising rates, but they want to excluz charitable giving. what do you think about that plan? >> people say the democrats are terrible at negotiating, this is exhibit a. this was the romney plan. he was saying toward the end of his campaign, forget about cutting rates. we'll
, that general john allen, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, who was here in washington preparing for his confirmation hearings for his next job at the supreme allied commanderrer in europe, the confirmation hearings are on hold and he is now implicated in this controversy, because of 30,000 pages of e-mails to jill kelly, who is the woman who launched this investigation. so it really keeps unraveling. it's like an onion you keep rolling back. we also need to look at the contentious custody battle that jill kelly's sister was involved in. we now understand that petraeus and allen both wrote letters o, asking the judge to show leniency to kelly's sister. was there undue influence used by the two men for these wome women? and was there, were there any laws broken? it just keeps getting, it's not as simple as the simple sexual affair at this point. >> eric: jennifer griffin, thank you for keeping us up to date. listen, folks, this story reads like a cross between tmz and a spy novel except it's true and it implicates the top spy. our top wartime general and at least three women. and exposes
